Link to my survey about YouTube use

Winter 2012 February 12th 2012

Title of Study: Mediated communication research for COMM3P15 at Brock University

Student Principal Investigator: Kristy Lonski, Undergraduate Student, Communication, Popular Culture and Film, Brock University

Faculty Supervisor: Jennifer Good, Associate Professor, Department, Brock University

Dear survey participant,

My name is Kristy Lonski and I am a student at Brock University interested in research on the passive and active usage of YouTube as a social media entity. This research is being overseen by Jennifer Good, Associate Professor in the department of Communication, Popular Culture and Film at Brock University.

The purpose of this research project is to gain insight into why individuals choose to use YouTube, and whether they passively (just watch) or actively (comment, rate, post video’s etc..) participate on the site. Moreover, the research would help also illustrate the underlying motives for these participants in using this site, whether it be for personal or ‘sharable’ reasons. Should you choose to participate, you will be asked to fill out a survey asking various questions about your involvement on YouTube, this will include whether you have an account or not, what types of videos you most watch, whether you are an active or passive participant, etc. I will then use the data provided to inform my research.

The expected duration of the survey would take approximately 10-15 minutes.

The information we collect as a result of our research will be used in a poster session and essay both due at the end of the winter semester, April 2012.  If you would like to attend the poster session, please contact me directly and I can provide you with the details.

This research should benefit in understanding the ways in which we use YouTube as a communicator and facilitator of public knowledge. Moreover, your participation would allow for more collectable information to better understand an individual’s personal use of the site.

If you have any questions about your rights as a research participant, please contact the Brock University Research Ethics Officer (905 688-5550 ext 3035, reb@brocku.caIf you have any questions, please feel free to contact me (see below for contact information).
